Olympic RELAYS project nominated for Podium Award – voting is now open
BU is proud to announce that RELAYS (Regional Educational Legacy for Arts and Youth Sport) has been shortlisted as one of six Olympic inspired projects for the Podium ‘Coubertin's Olympic Vision’ Award 2012. Voting is now open to the public to decide the winner. Click here for details.

Higher Education Funding Council for England T-funding consultation
The Higher Education Funding Council for England recently published its consultation on changes to student number controls and teaching funding post 2013/14. HEFCE are seeking views on these proposals and BU will be submitting an institutional response. Members of staff are invited to contribute to this response during a Policy Seminar at BU or directly to Policy Advisor to the Vice-Chancellor, Colette Cherry.
Parking at the Lansdowne Campus
Estates & IT Services regret the continued inconvenience caused by the closure of the car park at the rear of Studland House and Royal London House. We are aware that permit holders are finding it difficult to locate a parking space and would remind all that parking is available at the following locations.
Staff Intranet launches on Monday 30 April
Many of you have been involved in the development, design and structure of the new Staff Intranet, which will be launched on Monday 30 April. It will provide staff with a new and exciting communication and information channel with up-to-date news, and will make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for due to improved structure and navigation, and a new Google Search functionality.
Emergency / serious incident telephone number - 222
Members of staff are reminded that to report an emergency or serious incident at work they should call the University’s emergency number extension: 222. This number is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Do not call the emergency services yourself – the caretakers/receptionist will do this to make sure they are directed to the appropriate building and avoid unnecessary delays. If you are calling from a mobile or external phone, dial 01202 965448 – this call will be dealt with in the same way as a 222 call. It is important to keep this line clear so please do not use unless it is absolutely necessary.

Restrictions to vehicle access at the Talbot Campus
The main Talbot Campus access road from Fern Barrow to the rest of the campus will be reduced to a single lane until further notice while construction works are being carried out. Priority will be given to incoming traffic at all times, and please observe temporary roads signs as appropriate. Please note the cycle lane is still in use so care should be taken to ensure the safety of cyclists.
Business School welcomes guest speaker from IBM
The Business School will welcome Mike Bernard, Head of Large Enterprise Marketing for IBM UK and Ireland, for a guest lecture on Monday 30 April.

New Supplier Request Form – takes effect from Monday 30 April
With the advent of e-Procurement it has become clear that the current New Supplier Request Form requires updating. From Monday 30 April a new form that properly reflects the e-Procurement requirements will come into effect.
Students’ Union office in Bournemouth House – now in BG06a
The Students’ Union Advice office in Bournemouth House has relocated to BG06a.
Centre for Qualitative Research masterclass – Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 June
The School of Health & Social Care’s Centre for Qualitative Research will host a masterclass that focuses on grounded theory - theory developed from data. Key writers such as Strauss, Glaser and Charmaz will be discussed and their specific approaches described with examples from grounded theory work. The masterclass will be held on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 June in the Executive Business Centre, Lansdowne Campus.

University Safer Neighbourhood Police Team
Staff and students are reminded that there is a designated police team for both BU and the Arts University College at Bournemouth. The team is based in T108, Talbot House, Talbot Campus.
New cycle compound outside Christchurch House - work to start from Monday 7 May
From Monday 7 May work will be carried out to install a new cycle compound outside Christchurch House, Talbot Campus. The compound will replace the open bike hoops around the building, which will be removed over the summer.
Fusion Investment Fund launched
Last week saw the launch of the Fusion Investment Fund at BU. At approximately £3 million per annum for the first three years, the fund represents the significant investment that BU is making in the development of staff and students, and the embedding of the Fusion philosophy.
University-wide Dementia Interest and Exchange meeting – Thursday 14 June
The Bournemouth University Dementia Institute (BUDI) will host a university-wide Staff Dementia Interest and Exchange meeting on Thursday 14 June.

The countdown to the launch of the Staff Intranet has now begun. We are delighted to confirm that the new site will be launched to staff on Monday 30 April.
EU-Canada Study Tour and Internship Programme – opportunity for students
Staff are encouraged to publicise the EU-Canada Study Tour and Internship Programme to students. This EU-funded programme offers students from EU Member States a unique in-depth experience of Canada and of EU-Canada relations during September 2012.
Appointment of Director of Development & Alumni Relations
BU is delighted to announce the appointment of Claire House-Norman as our new Director of Development & Alumni Relations. Claire is currently Development Director at Salisbury Cathedral and has wide experience of fundraising in the charitable sector. Claire will take up appointment on Monday 25 June. We look forward to welcoming her.

Eighty per cent of waste is recyclable at BU
Thanks to the comprehensive mixed recycling service provided by our waste contractor Biffa; BU could recycle approximately 80 per cent of the waste generated on campus (excluding construction and hazardous/clinical waste). However results of a recent waste audit show that approximately 50 per cent of this recycling is still going to landfill.
Biomass project update – restrictions to pedestrian access
The temporary pedestrian walkway along the main Talbot Campus access road from Fern Barrow to the rest of the campus will be closed until further notice whilst excavation works are carried out to divert underground services as part of the biomass project.

Postgraduate researchers at BU are invited to join in the annual Postgraduate Researcher Conference on Thursday 28 June. This conference is designed to showcase the best of BU’s postgraduate research and to provide a unique opportunity for postgraduate researchers to present their work within a learning environment.

Parking and pedestrian restrictions around Lulworth House – until the end of May
Existing walkway and car parking closures around Lulworth House will remain in place until the end of May 2012 to allow sufficient time to deal with unforeseen materials identified during the demolition process.
Biomass project – works commence Monday 16 April
Work will begin shortly on a Carbon Management Programme project to provide heating for the Poole House complex from renewable woodchip.

Results for the BU Global Citizen Competitive Awards scheme 2011/12
The review panel has now considered all applications and made 14 awards of £500 each (£7,000 in total) for the following categories and students.
Additional car park closures around Lulworth House - from Tuesday 27 March
As part of ongoing enabling work to demolish Lulworth House, additional Studland House car park restrictions will be in place from Tuesday 27 March.

BU car parking permits required all year round
Staff are reminded that valid BU parking permits are required all year round, including over the upcoming Easter break. Scratch cards are available to staff wishing to park on campus over Easter from the Cash Office in Poole House, Talbot Campus or the finance office on the second floor of Melbury House, Lansdowne Campus.

An exhibition showcasing glass, metals and ceramics artwork by FdA students from the Bournemouth & Poole College is currently open in The Retreat, Talbot Campus. The exhibition will remain open until Monday 16 April.

Doctoral Supervision Development: Established Supervisors
This half day workshop, facilitated by the Graduate School, will provide participants with the necessary knowledge to maintain their skills in supervising doctoral postgraduate Research Students at BU and to share best practice between peers.
Doctoral Supervision Development: New Supervisors
This two part workshop, facilitated by the Graduate School, will provide participants with the necessary knowledge to supervise doctoral Postgraduate Research Students at BU by placing this knowledge within both the internal and external regulatory framework. On completion of the course participants will receive a Certificate of Doctoral Supervision allowing them to supervise doctoral students at BU for three years.

Revised academic regulations, policies and procedures
Please note the following amendments to the series of ‘Academic Procedures’ documents and the University’s ‘Standard Assessment Regulations’ with effect from April 2012. The changes, which relate to Assessment Boards and Monitoring of taught academic provision and ARFMs, are summarised here.
Improve your typing speed online
Learning to touch type accurately can considerably cut down the time it takes you to produce documents, as well as reducing the number of typing mistakes you make – leaving you more time to focus on other parts of your role. The IT Skills team is offering all staff the chance to increase their typing speed through an online course, using e-type from the Chartered Institute for IT. You can access the software from anywhere with a username and password that we will give you.
March/April edition of Bulletin is out now
The March/April edition of BU’s staff newsletter Bulletin is now available. This edition includes photos from the Queen’s Anniversary Prize party, an interview with Professor Tiantian Zhang, the new Head of the Graduate School, and an update on the Staff Intranet Project.

National Student Survey – current response rate
Following the past few weeks of BU’s campaign to encourage final year students to complete the National Student Survey (NSS), the current response rate is 45.30 per cent. Members of staff are asked to continue to encourage all eligible final year students to complete the survey, as each course is required to achieve a 50 per cent completion rate in the survey.

Teachers Pension Scheme (TPS) – update
Members of staff will be aware of the Government’s decision to review public sector pension schemes following a report by the Independent Public Service Commission. The aim of the review was to identify ways to make pensions sustainable and affordable, mindful that the cost of pensions is increasing. A number of changes were recommended which included an increase in employee contributions, Normal Retirement Age being increased in line with State Pension Age and future pensions being built up on a career average basis.

David Sweeney, Director of Research at the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) visited BU recently to answer questions on the new framework for assessing the quality of an institution’s research. Professor Jonathan Parker, from the School of Health & Social Care, also spoke to David about the Research Excellence Framework and what it means for institutions. Click here to watch the interview.

Hired vehicle drivers
Please be aware that hired vehicles should be returned or be ready for collection fully refuelled. This is because the University is charged a 20 per cent levy on top of pump prices. Any costs incurred for refuelling can be claimed back via Expenses or Petty Cash (up to £20).
Revised BU Finance Regulations
Towards the end of 2011 the University Board approved changes to the BU Finance Regulations. Overall the document has been simplified to provide links to other policies rather than repeat the content from them, and to include information around new legislation, including the Bribery Act 2010. Members of staff are asked to familiarise themselves with the content to ensure the University maintains compliance. Please click here to read the document.

Academic Offences – identification, prevention and investigation
Three new dates have been set for Academic Offences workshops. These sessions are intended to support academic staff in the identification, prevention and investigation of academic offences. The session will include assessment design, detection approaches (including a session on the use and interpretation of Turnitin software) and the processes for dealing with students suspected of having committed academic offences.
